Best Butt Overhaul

As I was strolling through the magazine section in Walgreens the a few weeks back, I came across the February 2012 issue of MuscleMag. Every now and then I like to scroll through and read articles regarding nutrition, exercise, etc. Towards the end of the MuscleMag magazine, I saw an article that was titled "Livin' La Vida."

Here is a piece was what the articled discussed. "...Cuban-born Vida Guerra has gotten her props in mainstream men's magazines, getting covers and being honored with the title of"Best Butt" by FHM."

Here is the a photo of Vida in the early 2000s.

 Featured in FHM magazine

The article goes on to discuss Vida's recent ventures. "...the 37 year old is racking up awards on NPC bikini stages. Guerra, who stands 5'2 and competes at about 105lbs, had auspicious debut at the 2011 NPC West Coast Classic, winning both her class and the overall in the Masters 35+ division...."

Here is a photo of her now.

First off, congrats to Vida. The NPC, and for that matter, any competition isn't the easiest thing to go for. It takes a lot of self discipline and focus, so God bless you on that. I just have a dispute I would like to air out. My comment on these recent turn of events is not going to be politically correct, but those that have been following me know that I could careless. Being as blunt as possible is just the way to go. I am truly happy for Vida. She's 37 years old and competing, which is blessing for anyone, especially someone in their mid-late 30s. Its not easy getting in that shape. She has truly reinvented herself and hopefully can bridge the gap between the NPC/IFBB and mainstream media. I really don't like to do this, but she should of keep her original facial features. The photos from her late 20s to early 30s were amazing, but look at her face. Now look at her recent work. In my opinion, she got something done. I don't know if it was due to medical reason or what not, but it got me and a few fans upset. God gave you a certain look, use it! She went to from Cuban born to American altered Italian. Again, I don't know why ... But .. Really?

 NPC West Coast Classic 2011

In closing, I am happy for Vida Guerra overall. Back in the day, she really had a butt to die for, but now she's on her way in becoming pro and at her age, that's amazing. My only beef is why the face change.  Please don't get me wrong, she was hot, still is hot and will be for decades to come, but she should of kept it Hispanic. We may never know.

Who Benefits The Most From Personal Training?

Within the fitness industry, their are numerous demographics that harness the pros from using a personal trainer. Throughout this article we will discuss what demographic truly gets everything out of personal training and why should you give it a shot.

The fitness industry has been affected by the economic woes as have everyone else. Though most fitness branches have lowered their cost in efforts to appear more appealing to the public, the one area that hasn't seen a downfall is the personal training department. Most gym goers that use personal trainers do it for the company as well as keeping their hopes on feeling good about themselves once again. Personal Training is being personal while training someone in efforts for them to better themselves not only in the physical form, but mental as well. Next time you hit the gym, look at the personal trainers and look at their clients. I can bet my bottom dollar that most of the clients are woman. This is a known fact. When you think of a women, think of their emotions. They are, by nature, more emotional then men. This is a fact and I'm not making fun of women at all, so don't misconstrued that at all.

When I've sat down with prospect women clients, 90% of them said that they want to feel good about themselves. They don't like the way they look and they want to feel sexy (in simple terms). I've told each and everyone of them:

"In order to accomplish that, you have to love yourself first. Yes you can do all you want in the gym, but if you don't love yourself, you'll never feel satisfied or proud of what you did. Of course you are here to better yourself like everyone else, but its all mental. You made the right choice walking through these doors now let's get the ball rolling to get you to where you want to be."

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not going to be satisfied until I get to where I want to be because that's how I've always been wired since I was small. I remember my father preaching when I was about 5 years old at 138th street in the Bronx. He finished his part by saying "God made you the head not the tail." Those words stuck with me forever. I love myself, but their is always room for improvement and that's the point I'm trying to get at.  So, when you do venture into the fitness world (men and women), just go with a clear mind.  Men are usually go in guns blazing, but women do go in with a different touch.  It's just the nature of the beast.

In closing, I believe that women use personal training to their advantage. They go in with more of an open mind.  At times they will tell you stories, let you know they have there period, how their day went, relationship issues, etc. I, personally, enjoyed my time with every client (both man and woman) I've ever trained.  Make sure your trainer has a personality because at the end of the day, they can have all the certs in the world, but if they are looking at you as a pay day, it's not worth it.  You are buying the company, not the certs.  You become life long friends and help them uplift their emotionsl to an all time high. Its a great feeling.

How Helpful Is Vinegar?

Vinegar isn't just for salads and volcano science projects. It has a very unique use that most people don't realize. Vinegar can help brighten the light on the supplement aspect of fitness. It has the same PH level that we have in our body. So with that being said, you'll be able to find out which company is nonsense and which is best for you. To see if the supplement you use is good, dip it in vinegar for about 10 minutes. If it dissolves, you got your hands on a good one. If it doesn't, see how far you can throw it since its being pooped out anyway.

Grab some supplements and see if its worth your money. The goes your Sweet Life Healt Tip Of The Day!

Finishing 2011 Strong

Since August, I've been on a mission to restructure my physique.  Here are is the before photo.

August 2011 Weight:  203lbs

This photo was after the modeling competition I was involved in.  I held some definition at the time even though it wasn't as sharp as I could be.  At this point, I already have my mind set up on putting on some healthy weight and going all out for the NPC.

Here is the after photo.

December 2011 Weight:  225lbs

This was taken not too long ago.  I've added on some size in key areas, so I feel like I'm on the right track.  As of course, their is a lot of room for improvement, but time is on my side.

The next pshyique shoot will come in the late winter to early spring.  At times, especially in bodybuilding/fitness competitions, it's good to photograph yourself to in order to see what your competors/judges see.  A 3rd person's point of view is key.

Health Treat With A Twist

At times we may get severely bored with diets. I came up with a pretty awesome solution one day that would change my life forever. Its a weird combination that I still get ragged on til this day, but seeing the health benefits makes it a lot easier to accept.

 Here is the treat!

 - 1 medium baked Sweet Potato with the skin

 - 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter

 - Cut the sweet potato sliced horizontally

 - Place peanut butter inside and close it up.

 - Let it sit for 1 minute

 - Enjoy awesome!

Now people may get freaked out by this, but don't knock it until you try it. Here are some health benefits of sweet potato.

 - low in sodium

 - low in saturated fats

 - low in cholesterol

 - Good source of fiber

 - Good source of vitamins B6, A, C, potassium, iron, calcium, manganses

 - Contains Carotenoids which help stabilize blood sugar levels and lowers insulin resistance thus making the cells more responsive to insulin treatment.

 - Contains an excellent amount of Beta-Carotene which helps fight chronic disease like cancer and heart disease. Also active in helping against inflammations related diseases such as rheumatiod arthritis and asthma.

So, this complex carb known as the sweet potato is basically a super food if you look at it for a healthy point of view. Keep in mind that natural peanut butter is a good source of healthy fats. This epic combination will keep you full throughout the day. Plus your taste buds will approve. This only taste a whopping 5-8mins to do, so its not time consuming at all.

Know Your Protein

As a weightlifting/bodybuilding addict, the one major supplement I depend on is protein.  Yes, protein is found in chicken, turkey, eggs, etc, but it's hard to get the amount of grams your bodies needs in order to keep the optimal amount of growth you desire.

Whether it's for breakfast, lunch, pre-workout, post-workout or just for the heck of it; the supplement of protein is hot on the market.  Since this is the case, their are different types that should be noted for reference.  Below is a list of the types of protein you may want to look into.

Whey Protein:     In my opinion, this is probably the best of the bunch in all aspects.  Whey Protein is easily accessible from your local shopping center to GNC.  They are different varieties and gimmicks, but when you get down to it, it's low costing no matter the brand.  This type of  protein gets into your system quick with no hassle as long as you consume your desired serving within 30 to 40 minutes prior to your workout.

The only issue some people may have with this type of protein is that it's partally derived from milk.  So, those people are allegric to lactose, this will not be your friend whatsoever. With that being said, there are two other types that fall under the whey protein umbrella.

Isolates:     This is the medium between small and large.  Protein Isolates have lower bio active compounds due to it's removal of fats and lactose from the substace itself.  So in essences, this is a product that will benefit people allergic to lactose .  This type of protein tends to have a milky taste.

Hydrolysates:  This protein is predigest which results in easier digestion and absorption by the human body.  This type of protein tends to have a bitter taste, but people believe it in.

Those are the three major type of proteins that any bodybuilder / fitness addict should know like the back of their hand.  At the end of the day, it's only going to make you that much better.

Dreams Over Dreams

I wish I could live my life twice just to go after everything I want to accomplish.  It seems like as time passes, my heart desires more and more.  As you all know by now, their is nothing better than a great challenge.  At the young age of 25, I saw myself coming to an impasse, in which I had to make a choice.  It was either to chase modeling (which I had success in) or go all out in bodybuilding (my first love).  After seeing how God works, it was revealed that my line of success would surround me with metal and heavy metal.

I know this is in God's hands from here on out, but best believe I'm going to do my best to cover my end.  It's a sport full of controversy, patience, dedication, will power, etc.  It's not a sport that's in the spot light, but rather creeps up every now and then.  One thing is for sure when you see a competitor in this sport, you will know it right off the bat.

In two years time, I will have made my mark.  I'm confident in my abilities, I know no boundaries and it is what it is.  In the first few seconds of every morning, I open my eyes with a smile.  I love my life . . . . I love my choice.

Fat Joe breaks The 100 Pound Weight Lost Mark

I want to congratulate Fat Joe on breaking 100 pounds in weight lost. I'm not a fan of rap anymore because I believe rap isn't the same anymore. The very 1st Terror Squad album is rap. That entire album stays true to it's form. Everything now is show boating and doesn't stick to it's true art form. Everything is window dressing, but it is what it is.

What I am a fan of are those people that grab a grip on their life and Fat Joe is one of them. The video that you are about to watch is a clip of reflection on Fat Joe's weight lost complements of WorldStarHipHop.

Good Ole Leg Day

Leg days, in my opinion, are the best days.  My theory behind that is simple.  It's the toughest day of the week that brings the most results when it's done right.  You shouldn't half ass any workout especially leg workouts.  Some people out their workout, but they don't workout.  They don't know how to push themselves push their breaking point.  They need to understand that it's ok if your quads are about to burst due to the massive pump and that one more set may just do that.  It's ok when that happens because when it does, that means your training right.  The gym is your save haven.  It's the one place where you can be yourself, grunt, curse, etc and 95% of the members understand and won't say anything because they are doing the same thing you are.

As some already know, I have my legs broken up into 2 days.  1 day focuses on quads, adductors, abductors, calves and abs.  The 2nd day hits hamstrings, adductors, abductors, calves and abs.  I like training it this way because you get to focus on corresponding group for 60 to 90 minutes.

Just below is my current quad training program.  Please note, no matter what I'm training, I always foam roll and stretch for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

-     Foam Roll / Stretch
Best thing ever invented.  It's like a free massage waking up all the tight joints and knots.  Amazing!

-     Leg Extensions:  4-5 sets of 15-20 reps
Lightweight throughout.  I do this to warm up my joints and to get the blood flow going

-     Free Motion Squat Machine:  1 warm up set of 20 reps / 4 working sets 8-12 reps
I have lower back pain and at times it gets pretty annoying, but it doesn't stop me from training heavy.
I switch back forth between this and the super squat machine.  I'm able to squat deep while having back
support, which is huge for me.  It feels like a regular squat, but at the same time it doesn't.

Vertical Leg Press

-    Vertical Leg Press:  1 warm up set of 20 reps / 3-4 working sets 6-12 reps
I love this machine! If you haven't used this because it's pretty rare these days, you need to try it.  It really
stresses the upper quad area and is a relativity easy motion.

-     Leg Press:  4 heavy sets 5-10 reps
Yea I know.  Two leg presses in the same day aren't the norm for most people, but its like any other
muscle group out their.  Every angle counts!

Sissy Squat

-     Leg Extensions & Sissy Squats:  Heavy extensions 8-12 reps followed by Sissy Squats
It's the last exercise for quads, so why not blast them to holy hell.

After quads, I go onto abductors and adductors then calves.  These two groups are vital, especially for bodybuilders / fitness competitors because when the side profile hits, everything has to look good.

Remember, always be smart in anything you do.  This is a quad program I personally do that may not work for you.  Find what works best for you because at the end of the day, you know your body the best.

No More Skinny Jeans For Me

Since the beginning of the year, I've been struggling to find my niche on the entertainment side of my ambition.  During the late winter early spring, I got the bug to pursue acting and modeling.  I felt like they go hand and hand, but I never put my first love (bodybuilding) aside.  I always knew, then, that if things weren't going the way I thought they would, I can always go back to slamming heavy metal.

200lbs

My resume and experience had a great boom.  I was featured on a successful web-series, national print for MLB,  pilot shows, modeling competitions, etc.  I loved it, but didn't like the fact that I was down to 193lbs.  Though I felt like I looked great in some of the shots I took, I didn't feel at ease.  I truly felt like something was missing.  Basically, I felt incomplete.

190lbs

One thing I did love was the fashion that Jillian Valentine (1/2 Sweet Life CEO) introduced me to.  I was able to fit into skinny jeans, tight shirts, scarfs, etc.   I was killing it on a daily basis, but their was always something eating at me from the inside.  My regin in skinny jeans lasted a good 2/3's of the year because the love of metal finally dragged me back in.

Metallica's Death Magnetic World Tour Nov. 2009 at MSG

This past September, I vowed to myself that I will never put bodybuilding in the backseat ever again.  Since then, I have went from 193lbs up to 218lbs and I feel great.  My nutrition has me taking in between 350 grams to 410 grams of protein daily spaced out into 8 meals.  I'm up at 4am - 430am 7 days out of the week and the first thing I hit is a 40-50 gram whey protein shake.  2 hours later I'm eating 2 whole eggs, 4 egg whites and 40 - 50 grams of complex carbs with 24- 36 oz of water.  I don't have time to play anymore games.  I know now that this is the lifestyle I want and I'm damn proud of it.

218lbs and loving it

I am on right on track to step on stage in 18 months, God willingly.  Never side step a dream.  Always stride towards glory.  Life comes around once, why stay stagnant in something your not 100% about.  If your heart isn't in it, step away and listen to what your heart wants.

Never Let Go

Shake Of The Day

Sweet Life Shake Of The Day

-  2 scoops of Myofusion protein powder

-  5 grams of Creatine Monohydrate

-  5 grams of Glutamine

-  2 tablespoons of Frescaverna by Quaker

-  12oz to 16oz of Water

You can either shake it up or blend it because either way, its awesome.  I may have this shake first thing in the morning, pre-workout or post-workout, but definitely post-workout 100% of the time.  It's great way to flood your system with good calories after a brutal workout.  Gaspari Nutrition is a great company that's very knowledgeable about their products.  I used this protein during my contest prep last year.  It's a great tasting product, especially when your dieting down due to its phenomenal taste.  I totally approve of this product and I will be purchasing much more.

We would like to congratulate Rich Gaspari on his Muscle Beach Venice Hall Of Fame Induction back on May 30th of this year.  We wish him success on all is present and future endeavours.

Current Body Frame Update

Since the summer, I have put on between 10-15 pounds of quality weight.  My offseason diet has been 85% clean, which isn't bad at all.  My protein intake remains above 300 grams daily.  I have been ingesting a lot more carbs.  Most of them have been complex, depending on the time of day and have been ranging between 300 to 400 grams daily.

With my mind focused on hitting the NPC bodybuilding circuit, my workout plan has remained intense.  I am still having two leg days.  One day focuses on my quads and the other is just hamstrings, but both days I hit my calves as well as my adductors/abductors.  Those are mandatory because I do not want to leave any stone unturned.  With my back workouts, I have my days where I will shoot for density and days where I will focus on separations.  Those workouts have been 2 days density and 1 day separation.  As for the rest, I've been going hard and heavy.

Below are pics up my frame as of today.  I weighed in this morning at 208lbs.

I'm liking my improvements, but it's a long long long road ahead.  Pics will be up at the end of October.

My Cheat Day

Today is my cheat day.  I believe that everyone should have at least one.  At times, we get mentally drained from hard diets, especially if your a bodybuilder.  Low carbs, high protein, low sodium, sugar, etc can make you crabby to the T.  I know first hand cause I went through this myself.

Here is a video that basically inspired me.  This is what I will do on my cheat day.

This video was filmed by Sara Flesch of her cat "Papa" also know on "The Real Garfield." It just made my day.  To see more videos of "The Real Garfield" check out her youtube at http://www.youtube.com/user/keilantra

Where Can Your Mind Take You

"Your body can sleep, but the brain will keep moving stressing over the next move in life.

Your body can rest, but the mind will keep plotting takeover's and landslides that will favor your cause.

Eight hours don't seem like 8 hours.

It will default your entity for 4 quiet minutes.

We work hard and then we work harder.

We stride towards the goal of completing the task at hand.

This lifestyle isn't for just anybody or anyone.

People have strolled down this lane thinking it's all fun and games until they see what needs to be done.

6-8 clean meals a day.

90 to 120 minutes 4-6 days a week for the rest of your life.

No drinking.

No smoking.

A gallon of water a day.

Your body talks and you mind listens.

The life of a bodybuilder.

The will of a Saint.

The heart of a soldier.

That is the life I live.  That is the life I want.  That is the life I respect.  That is the life I treasure."

Improving Your Shoe Game Makes A Difference

Little changes to your lifestyle will make a difference in your everyday life.  This post is for all the ladies out their especially those that rock heels on a daily basis.  With the good some a little of the bad.  You will see what I mean as I ramble on.

Paula's shoe closet gives my girlfriend competition

Thinking with the aspect of fitness in mind, rocking heels all the time isn't a good thing.   High heels may contribute to knee and back problems, shortened calf muscles, and an awkward, unnatural gait. Keep in mind this would be over a prolonged period of time.  The issue the angle on which a female would be walking around in.  The Knee issues and back problems will stem from the uneven weight distribution.  As for the shortened calf muscle, think of it as using a standing calf machine in the gym and holding it up.  Your calves are in consistent tension and that's not a good thing.  It's a prime result of most women busting out the flats after clubs or even at times go with the "EPIC FAIL" of being barefoot.  I never understood that, but they do it anyway.

There is one good things about rocking heels though.  That good aspect of the heel trend is that the consistent tension will help tone legs.  There is nothing sexier than a woman that knows how to rock heels with a beautiful outfit on a warm summer night .  Ladies who have master the art of rocking heels and posses a sense of fashion, I applaud you!  Some fail with flying colors, but those that know what they are doing makes life for us men all that much better.

With all this being said, women please have a level head when it comes to your shoe game.  Yes you can buy all the heels in the world when you drag your man to the mall in which we will be carrying all the bags because you buy too much, but even it out.  You can have sexy heels with knee pain in your later years in life if you don't address the issue in your younger start hungry years.  Their is no point in rocking heels to go to the corner store.  I've seen this many times and it's cool, but really? Think about it.  You will be ok having one day without heels.

Champion vs Champion

During a conversation with @Distrub_Vision aka Marcos, we fell onto the topic of bodybuilding.  We talked about some of other favorites such as Zane, Corney, Lou, Arnold, etc.  Then as I was surfing the net, I came across a pose down between Ronnie Coleman (8x Mr. Olympia 1998-2005) and Dorian Yates (6x Mr. Olympia 1992-1997).

I thought this picture was so awesome since they were never on the stage at the same time. I hit up Marcos via twitter with it.  I decided to then tag bodybuilding greats Coleman and Yates saying "Who you got @ ? @ or @ this is a close one. #Legends," not thinking anything of it.  2 days later I get a notification that @BigRonColman mentioned me on twitter.  Being a huge fan I go to the tweet and he said "It's not that damn close."

This didn't get here.  As some of us know, you can link facebook accounts with your twitter accounts.  Coleman has done this thus leading my tweet to be heatedly debated over.

One of the points that kept coming up is that Yate's picture in this photo isn't up to pare.  Even though Coleman competed at 295lbs and Yates hovered at 270lbs, people still felt that Yates had better of him.  The muscle mass and density on these guys are ridiculous, but Coleman does have more size.  Just remember, their are more mandatory poses that are involved in a pose down that choose the winner.  This is only one pose that started a debate between two champions.

This was one of the finer days in a long time.  I am a fan of bodybuilding despite all the rumors regarding performance enhancing drugs.  I still believe that this is one of the tougher sports to compete in because it all falls on you at the end of the day.  I have one competition under my belt and the diet alone will make or bad you.  It's not for the weak at mind that's for sure.  The will to win is a necessity!  I respect both gentleman.

May be one day I will stand on the same stage they stood.

OK Why Not

The Sweet Life brings to you "Ok, why not?"  For no reason in particular, why not?  Why not meaning give it a shot.  When it comes to your health, their is absolutely no reason to be afraid of change.  Whether it comes from the cardio side of training or the heavy metal (weight training, but heavy metal sounds more awesome) side.  Change is Good!

courtesy of maxcdn.fooyoh.com

Down below are some techniques you can use to switch things up.  OK, why not!

-  Vex 1  -

Some gym goers like to do cardio out right away.  This isn't a bad thing at all, but if you're trying to nail some lifting after, you may be a little out of it.  In honor of  "OK why not", try doing cardio for a good 10-15 minutes, hit the weights and then finish off your cardio.  If you took in a good portion sized breakfast, you should have a good 150 to 300 calories in your system ready to burn.  These good calories, mostly comprised of complex cards and protein, will give you the energy to target your muscle group for the day.  After burning off your good calories, go after your 20-40 minutes of cardio.  In this way, you warmed up enough to drastically lower the risk of injury, had energy to hit your muscular task for the day and now your using cardio to destroy your bodyfat.  So keep in mind to hit 10-15 minutes of cardio, push yourself in weight training and then focus on hitting your bodyfat with a little more cardio at the end.  Ok, why not?

This craze has been on the rise as of late in many gyms around the world.  The art of the foam roll.  I can attest to this that it is the best thing I have tried in my fitness career.  Muscle fascia is a fibrous tissue that coats muscles throughout your entire body.  Foam Rolling is a great phenomenal way to break up tight fascia in tender areas and relieving tension along trigger points. Rolling these areas decrease density and over-activity will result in better motion along with flexibility.

Foam roll before and after the workout.  Over time you will feel a whole lot better flexibility, range of motion and overall better health.  Ok, why not?

So in essences, take a look into these tips and run with them.  Life is short!  It's what you make of it.  It's already August, so live it to the max in healthy way.  The more you commit to fitness now, the more you will be able to play with your children and grandchildren in the future.  Plus, you save a whole lot in health insurance as the years pass.  Fitness can change life!  Ok, why not?
