Wish This Can Be Solved

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (A.L.S.), also known to many as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," has struck many around world as an unsolvable problem.  It's mind blogging how it can diminish the human body so suddenly.  As a fitness professional, I have been around colleagues, friends and members that have contracted this illness.  One attribute they all have in common is an upbeat attitude.  No matter what pain they go through, they always remain positive throughout the process.  God bless them all.

A.L.S. a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.  In some cases this can be transmitted genetically, but a good 90% are unknown.  Patiences with this illness show symptoms when they surpass the age of 50, but younger adults can show signs as well.  These symptoms are loss of muscle strength and coordination.  With time eventually gets worse and makes it impossible to do routine tasks such as going up steps, getting out of a chair, or swallowing.  In most cases, breathing and swallowing may be the first to be affected.

A.L.S. has no cure.  Medication is available, which prolongs the life span of the patient.  The sad part about this illness is over time people with ALS progressively lose the ability to function and care for themselves. Death often occurs within 3 - 5 years of diagnosis.  About 25% of patients survive for more than 5 years after diagnos.

Many support groups have sprung up in an effort to find a cure for this debilatating illness.  I urge all fitness enthusist to help fight A.L.S.  I felt the need to bring this situation to light.  Being able not to control your own body isn't the way to go.  My prayers go out to all with A.L.S.  With time, I know that technology will improve, thus leading to a cure.  Hopefully it can come sooner than later.
