Since summer is upon us in the great state of New York, most people are looking to take advantage of the great weather. Days like today, which hit close to 90 degrees, has us dying to hit the beach. While some of us are prepared to expose ourselves to the outside world, some aren't.
To fix this problem, you need to get yourself moving. Whether it's running and exercising at home or hitting the gym. If you are looking to hit the gym, here are some points that should weigh in on your home away from home.
1. Location

This is probably one of the bigger issues their is when choosing a gym. Some people like to workout early in the morning before work and others at night. You need to choose a location that is feasible for you. A place where you will have enough time to shower and gear up for work without running behind schedule. Some like it close to home and others by their work place. This is really is a personal preference, but neither the less it weighs as much as any other point.
2. Environment

I, for one, can focus in any environment since I'm a seasoned vet of weight training. For beginners, this will play a huge factor. Now I've been in the fitness industry for close to 6 years. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen prospective members walk in and walk right out due to the environment. It's ok, this can be overwhelming. The first thing you should keep an eye out for is the front desk staff. Not for nothing, that's the first line of defense. If you walk into a place and the rep is chillen on their Ipod not paying attention, it shows lack of respect for their place of employment and its members. When greeted with a smile and attentive, it makes life a whole lot easier. A friendly face is always a good thing. It can turn a bad day good.
When touring the facility, keep an eye out for porters, maintenance staff and overall club staffing. Trainers should be training, facility should be kept clean and staff should be conducting themselves professionally. You should basically be able to walk into the club feeling a good vibe. If you got that, that's the place to be.
3. Motivation

If you're walking into the gym to improve what God has given you, that is half the battle. Many people have purchase memberships, used the gym for 6-8 weeks and have disappeared. Being apart of the fitness industry, I have seen this one time to often. The big rush usually comes around New Years. People are excited to change their life and many feel it's a new beginning. They last up to 2 months then loose the motivation. Some are just starting out, see results, but then leave when their weight/bodyfat doesn't improve. At that point in time, seek help! See what the club amenities are. Some locations offer personal training, pilates, group exercise classes, etc. Don't give up . . . . just do it! Plus, you are spending money for it, so you might as well get your money's worth.
I tell my clients that working out is 90 percent mental. If you have the will power, you will see results. It goes hand and hand. The mind is the strongest part of the human body. You it to you advantage. It can make you go that extra mile, it can give you the courage to ask out the woman of your dreams or it can be your demise. It's all mental!
With these points fresh in your mind, you should be able to make the best decision for you and your family. Be smart and take your time. Every gym on the face of the planet has some type of free trial. Use it to your advantage. Do the research on franchise to make sure they are what they say they are. Every fitness facility should be practicing what they preach. If they don't, its not for you.
You have the power and its in you hands. When treading these waters, choose wisely. Motivation is all you need.
Until Next Time,
